. >>> we have the situation of the death of ambassador christopher stevens in libya. lots of vagueness about what really went on in the days leading up to this and indeed afterwards. what is your assessment of where we are now? >> what is not vague, and that is five days after what was very quickly determined by the intelligence committee as a terrorist attack, they trotted out our ambassador of the u.n. to every major news outlet saying that this was a spontaneous demonstration because of a hateful video. that's probably one of the worst things that i have ever observed in my life, and obviously there were warnings, and obviously anybody who believes in an attack with mortars and rocket hi rocket-propelled grenades, a very sophisticated attack, is the result of a video is just ridiculous. it's not the video that's stokingdemonstrations, it's the iraqis who are using these videos, and i'll be damned if i'm going to vacate the freedom of speech because of muhammad. >> are you in favor of her resigning? >> no, she was shooting the messenger. she was told to do that. i b

steven gould many years ago. and, gould and verba were talking about in the context of evolution but i think a word brilliantly applicable to innovation in technology and science and many other fields. the idea is this. in evolution there are many cases where a feature or a trait that evolved for one particular purpose turns out surprisingly kind of serendipitily when the organism in the environment changes. an example of this is feathers. we think feathers evolved to keep their owners warm basically. over time some creatures evolved feathers decided to adopt crazy new lifestyle of flying and ones had new feathers were better at it than ones that didn't have feathers. at one point evolution starts to skult the feathers to make them aerodynamic. so they're still just keeping them warm. flying birds have slightly asymmetrical feathers which gives them better aerodynamics essentially. you can see the shaping of after the change. the idea in accepttationy trait designed for one thing gets designed for something else.
